                        Can You Use Your Local Police Department and Get the Same Results?

                        This is a question that many companies are asking these days as government agencies, including police departments, are attempting to become more proactive in working with their respective communities in supplying information and training against acts of violence and terror. The main reason for the comparison, at least on the surface, is simple – Blue-U Defense (and other like organizations) costs money and the services of your local Police Department are free! If it were that simple, however, we would not have a highly successful, rapidly growing business.

                        There are so many things to consider when making this comparison and it’s critical that you not only understand the differences, but further understand the questions that need to be asked regarding what you are trying to accomplish in securing your business, employees, and clients. So, here goes:

                        I think it’s fairly safe to assume that most would believe that acts of violence and terror, whether they be on a personal, or organizational level, are increasing. This belief has significantly raised the concerns of business leaders, educational leaders, etc., as wells as employees and individuals, to begin to consider whether or not their organizations and/or they themselves are safe and need to do more to ensure security, at least to the extent possible. And note that I specified “individuals and employees” in additions to business and educational leaders. Recent Human Resource studies have concluded that Millennials are placing safety and security at work higher on their list of concerns than any other generation. Does this mean that a good safety and security program could make you more attractive as an employer?

                        With that in mind, the assumed solution, is training. While training is a large part of the solution, it is not by any means the only solution. In fact, training alone simply will not secure your organization. And whether or not it does anything to improve your organizational or personal security at all depends on several critical things.

                        For now, we’ll focus strictly on the training aspects. So, if you come to the realization that you have to do more for the safety and security of your business, employees and clients, the first consideration has to be “what is it that you are trying to accomplish with the introduction of violence training into your organization? What are your goals for such training? The following two questions will assist you in determining what type of training, and corresponding trainers, to seek out:

                        1) Are you looking for “training just for the sake of training” or “Check the box training”?


                        2) Do we truly want to keep people safe, limit organizational liability, and mitigate risk?

                        The results of your answers will immediately tell you whether you should seek the services of your local police department or a company that is provides a much higher level of dedication, expertise, and services.

                        If you chose number 1:

                        “Training for the sake of training” or

                        “Check the box” training:

                        If you are looking for “training for the sake of training”, “check the box”, or free or inexpensive training solutions – Call your local Police Department! Again, it’s likely free.

                        If you chose number 2:

                        “You truly want to keep your people safe,

                        limit liability and mitigate risk”:

                        If you truly want to keep your employee’s safe, both at work and at home, if you want to limit organizational liability, and if you want to mitigate organizational risk, then what you need is far more than simple live or online training courses delivered with limited expertise, engagement, or impact. What you need is a complete plan that, believe it or not, will cost money. You need a partner with a high-level of expertise and understanding of not only violence, the criminal mind, psychology, etc., but business, insurance, policy/procedure, governing agency guidelines, liability limitation, risk mitigation, and how all of this comes together to meet goals that are far more than “training for the sake of training”. You need a partner that is dedicated to developing and delivering products and services designed for these three things – keeping people safe, limiting organizational liability, and risk mitigation.

                        Limiting Liability and Risk Mitigation

                        The number one goal of any organization, bottom line, is to truly keep its employees and client’s safe. I would find it very difficult to believe that there are any exceptions to this. If, however, something fails and we just can’t do this (and it’s impossible to protect our employees from everything), it’s critical that you are able to show that you did everything possible to do so. This requires a systematic program that, again, includes far more than a simple training course, or even a series of training courses (a series of training courses will always be far better than a single training course). In the end, the more that you can show that you did to keep your employees and clients safe, and the more structured that program is, the better off you can be when it comes to limitation of liability and risk mitigation.

                        Why are the Credentials of Your Partner So Important to Success?

                        I discuss this every time that we conduct our training courses hundreds of times each year. My partner and I have some pretty impressive credentials stemming from our law enforcement careers. While this is great and we are proud of our accomplishments, our expertise in law enforcement is responding to incidents of violence once they have begun. While law enforcement and military credentials might appear to be what you are looking for in a trainer in violent encounters and active shooter incidents, in reality, these professions have little to nothing to do with the ability to competently teach you how to stay safe in that potentially very deadly space between when the problem presents itself and when help actually arrives; a space we call “the life-or-death gap”. And it’s this very window where everything that you do to prepare for survival must be focused. And, again, achievement of these goals goes far beyond actual training courses.

                        More on Credentials – What are the qualifications of those who you are trusting as your partners?

                        Most, and I qualify most, law enforcement professional training in active shooter and survival in that potentially deadly “life-or-death gap” amounts to this:

                        A 1 or 2 day instructor training course! That’s it! Anyone that has the desire can attend one of these instructor training courses and literally in 1 or 2 days, become an expert in the topic. “Some”, and I emphasize “some”, may extend their training with additional short-term training courses here-and-there and/or possibly reading some articles periodically, however, in the end, this very limited training is their entire basis of expertise. What this amounts to is an instructor, who doesn’t have nearly enough knowledge of the topic, reading from a Powerpoint that they received as part of their certification course. And again, these courses don’t touch on anything further than the actual act of violence itself; the equally critical business considerations, human resources, policy and procedure, insurance, communication, etc. And most are based in acronyms and creative terms designed to help us remember what to do when reality strikes (rarely will this work). Most are simply “telling us what we already know”.

                        Who Can Get This Instructor Certification?

                        It can be just about anyone. In fact, we have been asked numerous times about developing an Instructor Level Certification Course ourselves. This is something we will not do! At least not without a tremendous amount of vetting of possible instructors, prerequisites to even starting an Instructor Certification Course, a long-term, highly comprehensive and structured learning program that guarantees expertise and adherence to what we teach, and an understanding of why we teach it. One of the risks of offering an Instructor Certification course without prerequisites and without a structured program is control over instructors and what they might teach, how they might answer questions, etc. This can open a company up to some severe liability. And this is exactly what we find when we talk with clients who have utilized instructors from programs without a structured “Instructorship” program and criteria.

                        So, who is ultimately delivering the training to your people?

                        Again, it could be just about anyone! In many cases, with full-time police officers, these training positions are assignments – some willing and accepting of the assignments, some not. What is delivered are solutions to real problems that are never truly learned, explained, or understood by either the instructor or the student. Students attending these courses may have little knowledge, if any, in the of safety and security. So, many have either no security, law enforcement or military-related training. We have heard some absolute nightmare stories of things that have been taught that even those completely uneducated in the areas of instruction immediately recognize to be inaccurate and, in many cases, downright dangerous.

                        Run, Hide, Fight/Avoid, Deny and Defend - Acronyms

                        These are some of the elements that are the basis for many training courses given in violence survival. I ask you, however, to consider this:

                        Does it stand to reason that without any training at all, zero training in self-defense and/or surviving an act of violence, that should you become involved in a sudden, unplanned incident of violence, that you will do one of these things? You assuredly are

                        going to either run, hide, or fight. So, we don’t need someone telling us something that we already know. This is “training for the sake of training” or “check the box” training. There’s also the freeze element that is far more important to understand and find solution to.

                        Acronyms, codes, etc. will be absolutely useless in a reality situation.

                        In fact, the Homeland Security Law Enforcement Agencies, and Incident Command System says specifically that acronyms, codes, etc. are not to be used. Why, because they simply create confusion. We use plain English and say what needs to be said. Training based in acronyms, codes, etc. must be questioned on whether it will accomplish established goals, or not.

                        Think About the Available Time and Devotion to Your Real Needs

                        Think about a police department with numerous businesses, schools, etc. in their jurisdiction. How much time do you truly think they will be able to afford you? True solutions require numerous elements that far exceed a 1 time training course. They require an expert and thorough knowledge of business, policy, human resources, law, liability, risk mitigation, and on-and-on. They require partnerships that demand time and considerable effort and considerable expertise.

                        Free? Yes! Effective? It depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

                        Areas of Expertise:

                        You have to determine whether, or not, a potential partner truly understands your business, your clients, your industries challenges, etc. And you likely know that every business is highly unique and canned programs cannot simply be applied to every business.

                        Let me give you an example:

                        For the sake of active shooter and/or workplace violence training, would you consider hospitals and nursing/long-term care facilities to be interchangeable?

                        I can tell you that they are far from interchangeable!

                        We had a large long-term care association tell us that that they are hesitant of inviting anyone to speak on active shooter and workplace violence because every speaker takes programs designed for hospitals and applies it to long-term care. Why does this happen so regularly? Because it takes considerable knowledge and expertise to understand each business type and adjusting what is being taught to fit the specific challenges of each business type. This long-term care association, however, does invite us to speak at their annual conventions – regularly as they know that we truly understand their business and that is uniquely different than other. In each of the verticals that we serve we have very customized programs that have been designed by business segment, and even further, by individual client’s needs.

                        Are there other quality training partners out there? Absolutely. And this is where your comparison should be focused. On those whose daily profession is keeping your business, employees, clients, and families safe.

                        Request a demo of the actual live training session and directly compare those you are considering partnership with. Ask for a proposal that shows that your prospective partners understand your organizations specific needs, and outlines what they think you need to accomplish your goals. A high quality, professional organization should be more than happy to provide you with a demonstration and proposal.

                        So, in summary:

                        If you are looking for “training for the sake of training, or “check the box” training, call your local police department or find someone who is inexpensive. This is just like anything else – you get what you pay for.


                        If you are truly looking to keep your organization, it’s employees and clients safe, limit liability and mitigate risk then look to a professional organization that understands not only violence, but business challenges and that can design an overall program that will truly be a worthwhile investment that your employees will see as the best benefit you’ve ever offered them.
